➤ The sustainable main material: Clay

Clay is a natural raw material made up of fine clay minerals and is mainly found near water sources like rivers, lakes, and coastlines. Once extracted, the clay is purified and mixed with water, making it smooth and easy to shape. Artisans use it to craft vases, bowls, and a variety of everyday items. The pieces are then fired at high temperatures, which gives them strength and durability. This process makes clay a long-lasting and versatile material.

➤ Our production partners: Selected according to fair trade criteria

When selecting our local production partners, we emphasise fair payment, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses that have a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftspeople of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in handicrafts, allowing them to use the skills they have learnt from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to be able to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good living. As all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and ongoing personal contact with the companies.


➤ The production process: From raw material to finished vase

For our Tuban vases, skilled artisans at our production partners in Central Java, Indonesia, shape the clay on a pottery wheel to achieve the desired round form. After firing, several small holes are carefully drilled around the opening to attach the decorative woven rattan. The vase is then finished with a double layer of white paint. The entire crafting process takes about 1.5 hours per vase.
